Helping Those Affected by Domestic Violence
Our Policy Statement
Granta is aware of the misery and damage suffered by the victims of domestic violence. Domestic violence is a crime and we will treat it as such. When cases of domestic violence are reported to us, we will respond within 24 hours to all cases and immediately to any incidence which represents an emergency and danger to the victim. The needs and wishes of victims will be our first priority.
Granta will provide support and advise which is appropriate to each case. This action may include:
- Legal action against the perpetrator including termination of their tenancy.
- Working closely with other support services particularly Police, Social Services and Housing Services.
- Advising victims of all solutions that are available to them.
- Secure emergency housing or other safety measures to protect the victim, including the offer of our "Safe Haven" room in the victims home.
- Using powers under the Anti-Social Behaviour legislation (i.e. Anti-Social Behaviour Orders and Injunctions).
What We Will Do
Initial Contact
A person reporting domestic violence will be interviewed by telephone within 24 hours or immediately in the event of an emergency. The interview will be carried out by a Housing Officer of the same sex as the victim if that is their wish. A Domestic Violence Interview form will be completed at this stage stetting out the basic details of the case.
Immediate advice should be given over the phone and if the case is assessed as urgent a follow up investigation visit will take place within 48 hours and not longer than 5 days for any case. In the case of an emergency the victim should be encouraged to report details of the violence to the police. The visit should take place at the home of the victim or at a mutually agreed private location if that is not considered safe because of ongoing abuse.
