Applying for Housing

Accommodation

Granta Housing does not hold a waiting list for accommodation. Any properties that we have available will be advertised by local Choice-Based Lettings schemes in their publications, in council offices and on their websites. For information on choice-based lettings, please see Choice-based lettings

Most local authorities run a choice-based lettings scheme whereby anyone looking for housing can place “bids” on properties that are available and which they are interested in. The system is designed to give housing applicants more choice over the property that they are allocated.

If you are looking for housing, you will first need to apply to your Local Authority. They will assess your housing need, taking into the consideration the following:

a) The extent of your housing need with regard to the condition and size of your present accommodation and the type of tenancy you have.

b) Social and medical factors (evidence in the form of letters from your doctor, social worker etc….. are needed before you will be awarded social and medical needs points).

c) Reason for wanting to move to the area required such as current or previous residence, employment or the need to be near close relatives.

d) Whether you have other solutions available to you e.g. a right to Local Authority housing or the financial ability to buy or rent adequate private accommodation.

Those that are successful tend to be the people who has been in the highest band for the longest period of time, as those in higher bands have a greater housing need.
